My grandfather’s story: Alexey Konstantinovich Kovalev
A front-line veteran, holder of the Order of the Red Star and head of Volodarske School No. 1 from 1967 — an essay by the local history museum of the Volodarske district.
For Victory Day, Vladimir Kovalev published an essay about his grandfather, Alexey Konstantinovich Kovalev, prepared by P. Apostolov, director of the local history museum of the Volodarske district.
Alexey Konstantinovich was born in 1925 in the village of Temryuk. At eighteen he was called up to the front, fought in the battles on the Molochna river and took part in the liberation of Ukraine and Belarus with the 24th Guards Division; he was wounded twice and discharged. He was awarded the medals “For the Victory over Germany” and “For Battle Merit”, and the Order of the Red Star.
After the war he chose a peaceful profession: he graduated from the Mariupol teacher-training college and the Berdyansk teachers’ institute, led schools across the district, and in 1967 took charge of Volodarske Secondary School No. 1 — the very school the foundation supports today. The family handed the Order of the Red Star over for permanent safekeeping to the local history museum of the Volodarske district.
The project continues
More than 600 pupils. The school’s boiler house has reached the end of its service life — the foundation is running a project to rebuild it, so that the children can learn in the warmth.
